Sony ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone Review

I recently purchased the Sony ECM-B1M digital shotgun microphone for the Alpha ecosystem.

The benefits of this microphone are:
1. The input is purely digital audio
2. The controls are physical on the microphone (so you don’t have to change settings in the menu).
3. The hot shoe connection eliminates the need for a 3.5MM wire.

Take a look at the video to listen to the different sound settings.

This video is NOT a promotion or ad. I was not paid for the video nor was I given a sample device to test (I paid for this out of my own pocket).

Sony 35mm F 1.8 Lens Review

I recently purchased a Sony 35mm F1.8 lens (SEL35F18F) and paired it with my A7C to make this review.

The low light performance is very good, but at the end of the video I was overly optimistic about the low light performance (I literally shut all of the lights off), as expected the ISO ramped up and caused some grain.

It still looked sharp and clear with very minimal lighting and I am looking forward to playing around with background lighting when I use it again.

Playing with old Canon Lenses

I found a two Canon FD lenses that I bought on ebay a while ago. I wondered if they would work with my Sony E-mount cameras, so I ordered an adapter ring and started playing around.

The lenses:

  • Canon FD 50MM 1.8
  • Canon FD 35MM 2.8

I took pictures indoors and out, and did some talking head video indoors.

My general conclusion is – while it is nice to play with old lenses, the new technology is far superior and makes life so much easier. You can not self-film/vlog with old manual lenses. I also really needed a ND filter outside.

Lens Review: Sony 18-105MM F4 Zoom

I recently purchased a used Sony 18-105MM F4 zoom lens for APS-C cameras on Ebay and decided to do a proper review.

I test both video and pictures as well as compared the performance to a 35MM F1.8.

It is a well-built lens and a decent performer, but it has some issues in the corners, it isn’t next level crispy, but what do you want for an 8-year-old zoom lens?
